4.0 or the Rise of the Machines…
Lots of organizations think they are at 4.0, when in fact, they aren’t anywhere close to it. To get to that level, it requires some minimal steps that we don’t see a lot on factory floors or in mines. Data exists, and there is no doubt that there is a tsunami of data available. The issue is it’s not usually in a usable format, located in data swamps or sometimes still on paper documents. We’ve seen data showing up in a different language or using the time zone of the head office (on a different continent). In some cases, the data is there, but organized on an Excel spreadsheet, with a tab per day or per week, making it very hard to analyze automatically, with Pareto charts, where lies its value. We’ve been on projects where we had to collect data manually as there was no magic way to collect it with the system. On another project, the data was there, eventually, but too late to be useful. At the end of the day, we need the right data, at the right time, to validate if we met our plan, and if not, to understand why we didn’t.
